Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common retirement and superannuation questions

When can I access my superannuation?

In most cases, you can access your superannuation when you reach your preservation age (55-60 depending on your birth year) and have permanently retired. If you haven't retired, you may be able to access through a Transition to Retirement Income Stream.

How is superannuation taxed in retirement?

Once you've reached preservation age and are in retirement, benefits from a superannuation income stream are usually tax-free. However, different rules apply depending on whether you take a lump sum or income stream, and your age.

What's the difference between preservation age and retirement age?

Preservation age is when you're eligible to access your super if you've permanently retired. Retirement age (which varies by birth year) is a separate concept. You need to meet both preservation age requirements AND be permanently retired to access your benefits.

How does superannuation affect my Centrelink payments?

Superannuation is generally assessed under the assets test for Age Pension. If your total assets exceed the threshold, it may reduce your pension. However, superannuation held within a superannuation fund while still working is generally not counted for asset test purposes.

Can I work while receiving superannuation?

Yes, many Australians continue to work part-time in retirement. If you're using a Transition to Retirement Income Stream, you must meet the work test if under preservation age. Once you've retired, you can generally work part-time while receiving super income.

What happens to my super if I die?

Your superannuation will be paid to your beneficiaries according to your fund's rules and any binding death benefit nomination you've made. If you don't have a nomination, the trustee will distribute it to your dependents or estate.

Should I take a lump sum or income stream?

This depends on your personal circumstances, including your age, retirement lifestyle needs, family situation, and financial goals. An income stream provides regular income and potential tax benefits, while a lump sum offers flexibility but requires careful management.

What is a Transition to Retirement Income Stream?

A Transition to Retirement Income Stream (TTR) allows you to start accessing your super from your preservation age even if you haven't retired. Income is taxed at concessional rates, but you must meet the work test to contribute during this phase.
